Rebels Continue Spring Drills On Practice Fields

3/25/2008 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. After three practices inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Ole Miss spring football drills moved to the practice fields Tuesday for a two and a half hour workout.

With nearly 100 fans standing along the perimeter, the Rebels labored in full pads on a sunny and exceptionally windy afternoon on campus.

“This is football weather,” said first-year head coach Houston Nutt. “There’s nothing like coming out here and practicing after a good basketball victory. We feel like we got some things corrected. We’re going to try to do it again tomorrow, do it better, do it faster.”

Nutt said the linebackers are showing progress but still have work to do.

“I really think they have improved fundamentally,” he said. “I think Tyrone Nix has done a heck of a job, and I’m glad he has a few more days with them. What you don’t see consistently is good tacklers and people getting on blocks.”

Among those in the linebacking corps, Nutt noted the effort of Chris Bowers, Jonathan Cornell and Allen Walker. A fifth-year senior from Shreveport, La., Bowers has spent much of his career at defensive end, where he started seven games as a freshman and sophomore.

“(Bowers) is a guy that works extremely hard,” said Nutt. “He cares. He’s shown some leadership. He’s quiet and does his talking on the field. I’m anxious for the next big scrimmage with him.

“Cornell has really looked good. I’m excited about him. Allen Walker showed up. He’s athletic. We just have to keep putting them in the right spots.”

The Rebels worked primarily in position groups Tuesday, focusing on skill and technique. Nutt said the team’s next major scrimmage will be on Saturday.

“We’re being very physical out here in practice with the one-on-ones and a lot of teaching,” he said. “But I like it when we put it down and really play the game, where it doesn’t just become boring. I want it to always be exciting, fun and play with a very fast twitch, at the speed of the game. That’s what you’re trying to get. Hopefully this Saturday, we’ll be a lot better than we were the first Saturday.”

Ole Miss continues spring drills Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT on the team practice fields. Spring practices are open to the public.
