Rebels Drop A Pair To Georgia

3/26/2008 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss Rebel softball team dropped both games of a double header to the No. 21 Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex by scores of 4-2 and 3-0.

Lauren Grill hit her fifth home run of the season, but Georgia (32-8, 5-3 SEC) used a two-run sixth inning to take down the Rebels 4-2 in the first game of the double header on Wednesday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

Grill gave the Rebels (15-17, 0-11 SEC) the early lead, knocking a home run to centerfield in the third, scoring Courtnie Ghinaudo and making it 2-0. Grill finished the day 1-for-2 with 2 RBI, while Ghinaudo was 2-for-2 with two singles.

The Bulldogs came right back in the fourth as Sojourner Moody and Alisa Goler reached on back-to-back singles to start the inning. Melissa Wood advanced both runners on a sac bunt, and Megan Wiggins and Taylor Schlopy each had RBI fielder’s choice plays, which allowed Georgia to tie the game at two.

Georgia took the lead in the sixth as Moody took first after being hit by pitcher Tara Willitt to start the inning. Moody was advanced to second by Goler on a sac bunt, and a double by Wood gave Georgia the lead. Another double by Schlopy scored Wood. Schlopy finished the day 1-for-3 with 2 RBI.

The Rebels could not produce any more runs as Sarah McCloud (9-2) picked up the win. McCloud allowed two runs on three hits and struck out six, pitching a complete game.

Willitt (5-7) picked up the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in 6.0 innings, and was replaced by Becky Nye in the seventh.  Nye struck out one batter in her one inning of work.

Game Two

Ole Miss left eight runners on base as the No. 21 Georgia Bulldogs knocked off the Rebels 3-0 in the second game on Wednesday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

Kristin Schanke singled to lead off the third for Georgia and moved to second on Sojourner Moody’s one-out single. Alisa Goler then singled to left, but Schnake was gunned down at the plate trying to score from second by Rebel left fielder Alise Doubt. Melissa Wood was internationally walked, but Megan Wiggins popped out to end the Bulldog inning.

The Bulldogs would jump on the scoreboard in the fourth. Taylor Schlopy walked to start the inning for Georgia. She stole second and moved to third on a sac bunt by Jennie Auger. Schlopy scored on a ground out by Christie Hamilton to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Victoria Sanders and Moody singled to start the fifth inning and moved to second and third on a ground out. Wood walked and Wiggins singled up the middle to drive in Sanders. Jennie Auger walked to score Moody and give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Hamilton struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Rebels threatened in the sixth as Lauren Grill led off the inning with a double to right field. She moved over to third with one out on an Ashley Dowdy fly out, but Lauren Rowe flew out left to end the inning.

Grill finished the game 1-for-2 with a double and Alise Dobut added two singles in three at-bats.

Lindsey Perry (4-4) started for the Rebels and pitched 4.0 innings. She allowed six hits and three runs. Becky Nye entered in the fifth and pitched the final 3.0 innings. She allowed only one hit and struck out three batters.

The Rebels will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. this weekend for a three-game set with the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide. The Rebels and the Tide will play a double header on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Alabama Softball Complex.
