Lady Rebel Netters Fall To Vanderbilt 7-0

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss women’s tennis team fell to 11th-ranked Vanderbilt 7-0 Friday evening at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. The Lady Rebels will conclude the home portion of their schedule Sunday with a Noon match against Kentucky on Senior Day.

 

Once again, the Lady Rebels (4-13, 0-7) were right there in the doubles and could have won the point.  The Commodore pair of Amanda Taylor and Courtney Ulery defeated 42nd-ranked Nika Koukhartchouk and Karen Nijssen 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, giving the Reb duo just their second loss in SEC play. Ole Miss evened doubles play at the third position as Preethi Subramanian and Soledad Podlipnik defeated Taka Bertrand and Keilly Ulery 8-6.

 

The doubles point was decided at No. 2 doubles in a match that went into a tiebreaker  Mimi Renaudin and Laura van de Stroet led the Vanderbilt duo of Caroline Ferrell and Catherine Newman 6-3 in the tiebreaker, but couldn’t hang on, as the Commodores went on to win the match 9-8(6) and clinch the first point.

 

VU’s Newman extended the Vanderbilt lead to 2-0 with a straight-set victory over Nijssen at No. 2 singles. Newman won the opening set 6-3, and captured the second set 6-4.

 

Freshman Keilly Ulery brought the Commodores within one point of clinching the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Renaudin at the fifth singles position.

 

Vanderbilt (14-3, 4-3) clinched the victory at No. 6 singles as Podlipnik fell to Ferrell in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.

 

In the feature match, Koukhartchouk and No. 22 Taylor battled to a third set.  After Koukhartchouk won the first set 6-3, Taylor responded by winning the second set 6-2.  She raced out to a big lead in the third, but Koukhartchouk rallied to tie it up at 4-4.  They would go to 5-5 before Taylor won the final two games for the win.   

 

Ole Miss will honor its seniors Sunday before the match. All fans attending the match will receive a free Ole Miss Tennis ball.
