Ole Miss Men's Tennis Downs Vanderbilt 6-1

3/28/2008 | Men's Tennis

NASHVILLE, Tenn. The No. 7 nationally ranked Ole Miss men’s tennis team downed No. 35 Vanderbilt 6-1 Friday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center to improve to 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the SEC.  They will travel to Lexington, Ky., Sunday to face Kentucky at Noon CT.

The Rebels handed Vanderbilt (10-6, 2-5) just its second loss at home this season.  Ole Miss has now won the last four meetings by a combined score of 23-5.

Both teams dealt with less-than-ideal weather conditions throughout the match. At first, a rain shower delayed warm-ups, forcing the match to start 30 minutes later than the intended start time. As the match progressed, the temperature continued to fall from the mid 60s early in the day to the mid 40s at the conclusion of the match. After Ole Miss had taken a 4-0 lead in the match, the remaining three singles matches were finished indoors due to rain.

Ole Miss won the doubles point, sweeping all three matches to take the early 1-0 lead.  They followed up that up with impressive wins on courts five and six singles to build a 3-0 advantage.

Sophomore Kalle Norberg dominated VU’s Alex Zotov 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5, and then senior Jakob Klaeson won his match against Adam Baker, 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.  Junior Jonas Berg finished off the Commodores with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Bryant Salcedo at No. 4.

“The guys did a great job of dealing with the adverse conditions and coming away with a solid victory,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “Every match from here on out is important in the SEC race, and we took care of business.”

Once the match was moved indoors, Vanderbilt gained their only point of the day, as 75th-ranked Ryan Preston knocked off 16th-ranked Rebel Matthias Wellermann, 6-2, 6-4 at the top spot.

Ole Miss then won at Nos. 2 and 3 singles to complete the match.  Robbye Poole defeated Commodore Vijay Paul 7-5, 6-4 at three, and then Erling Tveit beat Nick Cromydas 6-3, 7-5 at two.
