Rebels Ready For Second Spring Scrimmage

3/28/2008 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt was pleased with his team’s effort Friday, as the Rebels held their sixth practice of spring football drills.

With nearly 100 high school coaches looking on as part of Ole Miss’ Spring Coaches Clinic, the Rebels worked for two hours on the practice fields and geared up for their second scrimmage of the spring on Saturday.

“We’re getting better,” said Nutt. “The guys are having a good attitude and fighting through some soreness. We had to challenge them again about the cutoff switch. I’ve been real proud. A lot of them are really taking steps forward.

“I’m anxious for this scrimmage tomorrow. We’re going to scrimmage a little bit more than we have all spring and put a grade on this one.”

Nutt has praised his receivers this spring and noted the versatility of junior wideout Dexter McCluster on Friday.

“Dexter can do a lot of things,” Nutt said. “He’s doing well at the wide receiver position and punt returner, and then we put him at quarterback for the “Wild Rebel”. He’s very, very good.”

The Rebel receiving corps was also strengthened Friday by the return of junior Marshay Green to the practice field.

“He is a welcomed addition,” said Nutt. “He looked very fresh. We have to hold him back. He can do too much that first day when he’s missed so much time. He looked good.”

Meanwhile, sophomore running back Jeremy McGee saw some action on the other side of the ball, taking a few snaps at cornerback.

“We’re just going to give him a look there,” Nutt said. “We’ll give him some more reps at tailback tomorrow. We’re just trying to look really hard at our cornerback situation.”

Ole Miss will be practicing inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium Saturday, beginning at 12:40 p.m. Spring drills are open to the public, and fans attending should enter through Gate 7 on the west side of the stadium.
