Grill Named SEC Softball Player Of The Week

4/14/2008 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss sophomore Lauren Grill was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday, as announced by the league office. It is the first such honor for Grill, who was named to the SEC All-Freshman team last year.

The Tualatin, Ore. native helped lead Ole Miss to a win over No. 21 Mississippi State and the Rebels’ first-ever series win against No. 12 LSU on the week. Grill hit the game-winning two-run home run against MSU in M&F Fastpitch Classic on Tuesday. She followed that performance up by smashing two three-run homers against the Tigers, including the game winner in the second game on Saturday in Baton Rouge.

Grill hit .417 for the week with a .611 on-base percentage and a 1.167 slugging percentage. She hit three home runs, knocked in eight RBI and scored four run on the week. After hitting her second home run against LSU, Grill was walked three of her next four at-bats, including twice intentionally. She also played errorless shortstop and made several plays in the field to preserve wins.

“I think this is a very deserving honor for Lauren,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. “She was very impressive last week and hit two home runs to help us beat Mississippi State and LSU. She is doing everything we ask of her and really earned this honor.”

Ole Miss returns to the diamond on Wednesday as they travel to Knoxville for a conference doubleheader against SEC-East foe Tennessee. Game time is slated for a 2 p.m. at Lee Softball Stadium.
