Rebels Take Road Series From Arkansas

4/20/2008 | Softball

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. The Ole Miss Rebels used a grand slam by Lisa Conchos and a complete-game from Becky Nye to take the rubber match from the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks by a score of 6-1 on Sunday at Lady Back Yard. The Rebels and Lady Backs split the first two games of the series.

The Rebels (22-26, 6-19 SEC) got the lead-off runner on in the second after Lauren Rowe walked to start the frame. Rowe advanced to second on a sac bunt by Ashley Dowdy and scored on Michelle May’s double to left center. May then advanced to third on an arrant throw by Arkansas shortstop Dayna Huckabee and scored on a sac fly by Courtnie Ghinaudo to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead over Arkansas (33-22, 6-16 SEC).

Ole Miss put two more runners on in the fifth on back-to-back singles by Lisa Conchos and Amber Tramp with one down in the inning. However, Arkansas starting pitcher Katy Henry struck out Rowe and got Dowdy to pop up to end the inning. Tramp finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate with two singles.

Whitney Cloer singled to start the Arkansas fifth and advanced to second after Samantha Bucker reached on a fielding error by Conchos with one out in the inning. Brittany Robison singled to left to drive in Cloer to pull the Lady Back within 2-1, but Jocelyne Moncrief lined out to Rebel first baseman Lauren Rowe, who stepped on first for a double play to end the frame.

Lisa Conchos answered right back right for Ole Miss in the sixth with a grand slam to deep left field to give the Rebels a 6-1 advantage. The long ball was Conchos’ first of the season and second career grand slam. She also smashed a grand slam last year to give the Rebels a win over Arkansas in Oxford. Conchos tied her career high in hits with a 3-for-4 performance and knocked in four runs.

Nye (10-9) went the distance and picked up the win for Ole Miss. She allowed only one run on three hits in her 7.0 innings of work. She struck out three batters and issued only one walk in her 12th complete game of the season.

Henry (16-10) pitched 5.2 innings and suffered the loss for Arkansas. She allowed six runs, all earned, on eight hits, while striking four and walking four. Lanye McGuirt pitched the final 1.1 innings for Arkansas. She gave up two hits and struck one batter.

After starting conference play 1-17, Ole Miss has won five of the last seven SEC games to pull within one game in the win column of eighth-place South Carolina for the final spot in the SEC Tournament in Baton Rouge.

Ole Miss will host the South Carolina Gamecoks for a pivotal three-game SEC series starting on Saturday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, The Rebels and the Gamecock will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
