Rebelog: Football's Jason Cook

4/23/2008 | Football

Rebelogs are the latest feature on OleMissSports.com and provide a look into the life of Ole Miss student-athletes. The first of the biweekly blogs is from Rebel rising senior fullback Jason Cook from the football team.

"It's been a long, long time coming but I know change gon' come. Oh yes it will." Sam Cooke could not have said it better. There is a natural human tendency to abhor change. Yet during this period of change that we are going through, there is no sentiment of regret or disdain for change. Instead, change has been embraced and appreciated. There is a great feeling in the Ole Miss Rebel locker room; one of liberation and great anticipation of what is to come in the future.

I'm not really sure how to write this whole blog business to be honest with you. The closest thing to this I suppose is exchanging wall posts with my friends on Facebook. I will however give you an insight into my life as pertains to football. Being a senior comes with many perks and advantages, as well as added responsibility. I am an English major with a minor in Political Science, so as my undergraduate work has ceased to a trickle, there is less time strain in my day during this spring off season.

During spring drills, I tried to start my day off around 7:30 to 8:00 am with some quiet time in my Bible. I would be totally remiss not to acknowledge the driving force in my life which is Jesus Christ. After that it is off to class at 9 until around noon. Then the mad dash begins. I run home to grab a sandwich and some chips to go along with a Gatorade before practice. Then it's off to the IPF to get dressed. The daily itinerary is posted on the door as we walk in and most days it says we are in full pads. After your gear is on, we all head to meetings to watch film or walk through mistakes as well as daily installs for practice that day. Around 3:45 we lace em' up and strap em' on for practice. After getting a good day's work in it's off to my favorite part of the day....DINNER!! We all eat as a team before going our own separate ways. Whether we are headed to study hall, a study session or just home to sit on the couch, we do so with a full stomach and an aching body. After some leisure time at night with my roommates and/or girlfriend, I head to bed around 11:00, only to get up in 8 hours to do it all over again.

It is a high commitment what we do daily. There are many who admire the game and love to watch it, but to actually play is a different story. I love my teammates. I'm growing with these coaches and as a man. And like Sam Cooke, not only do I know that change is going to come... But it's here!!
