4/24/2008 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss Rebel softball team will host the South Carolina Gamecocks in a pivotal three-game SEC series this weekend at the Ole Miss Softball Complex in Oxford. The Rebels and the Gamecocks will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Rebels (22-26, 6-19 SEC) currently sit one game in the win column behind South Carolina (20-21, 7-13 SEC) for eighth place in the conference standings and the final spot for the SEC Tournament in Baton Rouge. This is Ole Miss’ final SEC series, while the Gamecocks will host LSU next weekend. After starting conference play 1-17, Ole Miss has won five of the last seven SEC games.

The series also marks the final home games for Rebel seniors Erin Faircloth, Elizabeth Holbert, Lauren Rowe and Tara Willitt. The foursome will be honored with senior day activities prior to the start of Sunday’s contest. In addition, all seniors age 60 and up will receive complimentary admission to the game as part of the festivities. Saturday is “Youth League Day” at the ballpark and all kids in a youth league jersey will receive complimentary admission.

Lauren Grill continues to lead the Rebels at the plate. The sophomore leads the team with a .370 batting average, 12 doubles, 11 home runs, 39 RBI and a .704 slugging percentage. Grill ranks third in the SEC in on-base percentage, fourth in homers, fifth in doubles and seventh in RBI.

In the circle, Becky Nye leads the Rebels with a 10-9 record and 108 strikeouts. Nye and teammate Tara Willitt share the team lead with three shutouts.

South Carolina is lead by junior Ashton Payne, who leads the squad with a .338 batting average. Jill Semento leads the team with five home runs and 18 RBI. Melissa Hendon leads the Gamecocks with an 8-12 record, while Kate Pouliot has a team-low 1.59 ERA.

The Gamecocks lead the all-time series 20-7, but Ole Miss has won two of the last four meetings between the conference schools. All three of the games last year between Ole Miss and South Carolina were 1-0 decisions, with the Gamecocks taking two of the three meetings in extra innings.
