Rebel Track And Field Posts Strong Showing At Drake Relays

4/26/2008 | Track and Field

DES MOINES, Iowa With a total of 12 NCAA regional marks, 13 top-10 finishes and one new school record, the Ole Miss track and field team was well represented over the weekend at the Drake Relays.

On the women’s side, junior Kadeshia Fortune finished in seventh place in the 100 meter preliminaries with a time of 11.85 to qualify for the finals Saturday afternoon.  Fortune went on to finish in seventh place in the finals as she posted her first NCAA regional mark of the outdoor season with a time of 11.74.

In the 100 meter hurdles, senior Kasey McDaniel posted an NCAA regional time of 13.51 en route to a fourth place in the preliminaries to advance to Saturday’s finals.  In the finals, McDaniel turned in a third place finish by posting a new school record and improving her NCAA regional time in the 100 meter hurdles with a mark of 13.22.

Junior Brittney Reese finished in second place in the high jump with an NCAA regional mark of 5-10.50 despite equaling the distance of first place finisher Racheal Gehret of Louisville.  The two jumpers were scheduled to have a jump-off to determine the winner, but a minor injury to Reese prevented her from jumping, therefore ruling her the second place finisher.  Reese returned from her injury Saturday afternoon to claim the individual title in the long jump with an NCAA regional mark of 21-06.75.  Reese has now won nine consecutive long jump titles this year, winning every time that she has competed in the event.

Also in field events, a pair of Lady Rebels recorded NCAA regional marks in the shot put.  Sophomore Davina Orieukwu finished in eighth place in the event with a regional mark of 48-04.75 to record the fourth longest distance in outdoor school history.  Freshman Betty Williams posted a regional mark of 46-11.50 en route to a 12th place finish in the event.

The Ole Miss relay teams also posted a good showing beginning with the 4x100 meter relay team finishing fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 45.79 to advance to the finals.  The Lady Rebels went on to improve their NCAA regional time to 45.28 by finishing in fourth place in the finals Saturday afternoon.

The 4x400 meter relay team also advanced to the finals with a time of 3:43.09 en route to a seventh place finish in the preliminaries.  Ole Miss improved five spots in the finals to take second place in the relay with an NCAA regional time of 3:40.24.  In the 4x800 meter relay, the quartet of Julie Little, Kirby Patterson, Lindsay Doucett and Britney Barnard nearly set a new school record by posting a time of 9:03.78 on their way to a seventh place finish in the event.  The current 4x800 meter relay school record of 9:03.75 was set during the 1999 season.

On the men’s side, junior Kyle Lewis turned in a ninth place finish in the 5000 meters with a personal best time of 14:26.03.  In the 3000 meter steeplechase, junior Barnabas Kirui earned the individual title by posting an NCAA regional mark and the third fastest time in school history with his time of 8:52.56.

Freshman Lee Ellis Moore posted an NCAA regional mark and a personal best time of 52.19 in the 400 meter hurdles en route to a 16th place finish.  In addition to the individuals, the men’s 4x200 meter relay team finished in 10th place with a time of 1:28.25.

Junior Wale Odetunde paced the Rebels in field events as he turned in a fourth place finish in the triple jump with an NCAA regional mark of 51-05.50.  In the hammer throw, senior James Maloney posted an NCAA regional mark and the second longest distance in school history with his mark of 190-07.00.

Ole Miss returns to action May 3 when the Rebels host the Mississippi Open from the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex.
