Ole Miss Volleyball Team Enjoying Success In Spring Season

4/3/2008 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. Hot on the heels of a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance and a record-setting performance in Southeastern Conference play, the Ole Miss volleyball team has hit the ground running again this spring in preparation for another successful fall campaign.

The Rebels recently hosted their own spring tournament that saw seven teams compete at the Gillom Sports Center, including: Arkansas State, Christian Brothers University, Memphis, Murray State, Samford and Division II powerhouse North Alabama.

To date, the Rebels are 10-2 in spring competition with more competition on the horizon.

“It’s the spring season and you can’t put a lot of stock in wins and losses, but it’s been a very promising time to be able to maintain a high level of execution with the loss of three senior starters,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. “I feel we are preparing very well for the fall.”

The Rebels are also adjusting to some rule changes that will take effect in the fall season that include shortening the game to 25 points per game instead of 30.

“We’re adjusting to the 25 point rule change where you only play to 25 points,” Getzin said. “The change makes the game much faster and brings a higher level of intensity to the game.”

Next up for the Rebels is a trip to SMU where Ole Miss will compete in the Mustangs’ spring tournament. Also participating in the event are SMU, Texas Tech, Texas-Arlington and Texas State.

The Rebels will then take the road April 11 for the inaugural SEC Beach Volleyball Tournament at the University of Florida.
