Five Rebel Netters Ready For NCAA Individual Championships

TULSA, Okla. Five members of the No. 4 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men’s tennis team will begin action Wednesday in the NCAA Individual Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

 

Only singles will be played on Wednesday, with doubles beginning on Thursday. Ole Miss has three in the 64-player singles draw and two teams in the 32-team doubles field.

 

Erling Tveit, ranked No. 22 in the nation, is making his third consecutive NCAA appearance in singles and doubles and will face Texas Tech’s Bojan Szumanski, in the first round Wednesday at 2 p.m. A two-time All-American in singles and doubles, Tveit advanced to the singles’ semifinals in 2006, and last year he reached the quarterfinals in doubles with former All-American Eric Claesson.

 

Robbye Poole, making his second straight NCAA singles showing, will face Ohio State’s Bryan Koniecko in the first round at 10 a.m. Poole, ranked No. 56, reached the round of 16 in his first appearance in 2007 on his way to becoming the 20th All-American in the history of the program.

 

Matthias Wellermann, ranked No. 31, is making his first appearance in the NCAA Individual Championships in both singles and doubles. He will meet Jack Baker of South Alabama in the first round, also at 10 a.m.

 

In doubles, Tveit and his partner, Jonas Berg, is seeded No. 4 and will face Nathan Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State in the first round. Wellermann and his partner, Bram ten Berge, will meet Alexandru Cojanu and Keziel Juneau of William and Mary in the first round.
