TULSA, Okla. Senior Nika Koukhartchouk and freshman Karen Nijssen of the Ole Miss women’s tennis team advanced to the second round of doubles at the NCAA Championships Thursday, with a three-set win over Arizona State’s Laila Abdala and Nadia Abdala.

Koukhartchouk and Nijssen, ranked No. 32 in the nation, led ASU 4-1 in the first set, before seeing the Sun Devil duo come back to tie it at 4-4.  At 5-5, the Abdala sisters won the final two games to take the set 7-5.   The second set went to a tiebreaker, with Ole Miss winning 7-4 to force a deciding frame.

In the final set, Koukhartchouk and Nijssen broke at 2-1 and led 5-2.  They served for it at 5-4, but ASU broke back.  Koukhartchouk and Nijssen immediately returned the favor with a break and held serve at love to clinch the victory.

The duo will face Amanda Granson and Melissa Mang (5-8) of Duke in the second round Friday.
