Matthias Wellermann Named To National Academic All-America Team

The at-large team is one of the toughest to make, because it includes student-athletes from several sports, including fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
A native of
Wellermann, who completed his career this past year, becomes the fourth CoSIDA national academic honoree in Ole Miss men’s tennis history, joining former Academic All-Americans Joakim Appelqvist (2nd team - 1994), Johan Hede (1997 - 1st team) and Sebastien DeChaunac (1998 - 1st team).
Off the court, Wellermann earned All-America honors and teamed up with Bram ten Berge to reach the NCAA Doubles Semifinals. He helped lead the Rebels to their seventh consecutive SEC West title, the SEC Tournament Championship, the NCAA Elite Eight and a final national ranking of No. 6.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, the College Sports Information Director’s Association whose membership nominates and votes on the award, has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
