OXFORD, Miss. Casey Phillips, a senior on the Ole Miss rifle team, was named second-team Academic All-American by ESPN the Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced on Thursday. The Clanton, Phillips, a two-time team captain, graduated from Ole Miss in May with a degree in Journalism and carried a perfect 4.0 GPA. She also received the university’s Taylor Medal, which honors academic excellence and is the university’s highest academic award. The Taylor Medals, established in 1904, recognizes no more than 1 percent of the student body each year. She is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and was twice chosen the Great America Rifle Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. As a junior, Phillips was named a second-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection. She was also the Ole Miss nominee for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship. The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes. To be eligible for a Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, the College Sports Information Director’s Association whose membership nominates and votes on the award, has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
