Rebel Golfers Competing In Major Amateur Tournaments This Week

6/3/2008 | Men's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. Four members of the Ole Miss men’s golf team will begin competing in the Mississippi State Amateur Championship Thursday at Tunica National Golf Club, while another Rebel will be in Pennsylvania participating in the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur.

Senatobia native Kyle Ellis, who recently wrapped up his career with the Rebels, is back in the state am field after skipping it last year to compete in the Sunnehanna Amateur. Ellis won the state am in 2006.

Jonathan Randolph, who just completed his first year at Ole Miss, won the 2007 Mississippi Junior Amateur Championship. The Brandon native made the SEC All-Freshman Team and finished third on the Rebel squad in stroke average. Randolph posted 17 rounds at par or better, including seven rounds in the 60s in helping Ole Miss earn its seventh NCAA appearance and second consecutive under head coach Ernest Ross.

Also in the field is upcoming junior Hugh Muse of Greenwood, and redshirt-freshman Billy Brozovich of Greenville.

Rising senior Jesse Speirs, a native of Bangor, Maine, will begin competing in the 55th-annual prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur in Johnstown, Pa., Thursday. The 72-hole stroke play event runs through Sunday and includes more than 50 collegiate players.

Speirs earned All-SEC second team honors in his first season with the Rebels. He led the team in stroke average and had three top-five and six top-10 finishes.

The Sunnehanna Amateur was inaugurated in July of 1954 -- it was the first country club sponsored 72-hole stroke play competition for amateurs in the United States.
