Ryan Potter Named Rebel Golf Assistant Coach

7/3/2008 | Men's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. Ryan Potter, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., has been named Ole Miss men’s golf assistant coach as announced by head coach Ernest Ross Thursday.  He replaces Jonathan Dismuke, who left to become the assistant coach at Texas A&M University.

Potter, son of Alabama women’s golf head coach Mic Potter, spent the previous season as a volunteer coach for the Crimson Tide men’s program, which ended the year ranked No. 2 in the nation.  He assisted in all practices, helped coordinate the Crimson Tide Open fundraising tournament, assisted with the golf camps and helped in preparation for official and unofficial recruiting visits.

“I am very excited about having Ryan join our program,” Ross said.  “He will be a great asset to Ole Miss Golf.  He has extensive teaching knowledge and experience in some of the top programs in America.  I know our players will respond well to him.”

Since June of 2006, Potter has been assistant director of the First Tee of Tuscaloosa where he organized and set up practices for the youth program.  He created and organized lesson plans for the Life Skills sessions of the program and ran practices and tournaments.   In addition he put together and managed the Bridge Builders Tournament and the Benefit Tournament, which provides funds for the First Tee Program.

Potter, who interned at the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), has been a golf camp instructor/counselor since 2005 for various camps, including the Mic Potter Golf Schools in Greenville, S.C., and Tuscaloosa.  He also trained Special Olympians for the 2007 State Special Olympic Games in Alabama.

“I gained a lot of experience at Alabama last year as a volunteer coach. The coaches were great.   I am really excited about being here at Ole Miss and working with (Coach) Ross.   I look forward to meeting all the guys on the team, getting out on the road recruiting and continuing the success of the program.”

A four-year letterwinner on the men’s golf team at Furman University, Potter graduated with a bachelor of arts in History and received his masters in Sports Management from the University of Alabama this past May.
