Ole Miss Holds Dress Rehearsal For Opener

8/23/2008 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. With the season opener one week away, Ole Miss held a dress rehearsal Saturday evening on a rain-dampened Vaught Hemingway Stadium, which was lit up by a test run of the new high definition video board.

With coaches on headsets, the scout team on the visiting sideline and a full SEC officiating crew on hand, the Rebels practiced for over two hours on the various details of gameday.

"We had a few errors but that's why you practice it," said first-year head coach Houston Nutt. "There was good substitution and traffic flow from the sideline. We really worked hard on the 40-second clock. Jevan (Snead) didn't have any problems with that. It was good"

Nutt said he was impressed with Snead's ability to manage the game, as the sophomore Texas transfer preps for his first season as the Rebel quarterback.

"Jevan was really good," Nutt said. "He has the most responsibility, getting all the formations and personnel right and reading signals."

Defensively, Marcus Tillman continues his successful transition to tackle from end, where he started all 12 games last year.

"Marcus Tillman has really had a great camp," said Nutt. "He's so dependable. He is going to line up correctly every time. He gives you great effort."

Nutt also praised the work of seniors Ashlee Palmer and Tony Fein in the linebacking corps, and noted that he expects Allen Walker to come back strong and Jonathan Cornell to be ready for the opener.

The Rebels were not the only crew practicing in the stadium Saturday, as the video staff was on hand showing all the action on the new HD board. The $6 million integrated system is being designed, manufactured and installed by Daktronics Inc.

"It is crystal clear and high definition all the way," said Nutt. "That screen is the best I've seen. It's really beautiful. Fans are going to love it. I know our players enjoyed it. I told them to get it out of their system tonight."
