Rebels Continue To Ready For Season Opener Against Memphis

8/27/2008 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. With the first game of the season only two days away, the Rebels continued preparations for Memphis under the sun on Wednesday.

“It’s about time to play a ball game,” said Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt. “It’s been a good camp, but it comes to the point where you have to put them out on the field and that’s where we are now. If you ask any coach or any player across the country, they would say they are absolutely ready to play.”

The Rebels piped in music to get the team ready for game day to simulate crowd noise and get the players ready to working in less than ideal conditions. The team worked in shells, continuing to run through drills and position work while also game-planning for the Tigers.

“It’s a tough matchup because (with Memphis’ receiving corps), but you have to be fundamentally sound technicians,” Nutt said. “That’s the key. But there’s no secret. You know their heights, their weights and you know they are good receivers. We have to do a great job of defending those guys.”

All the preparations have led to an added excitement from the players and coaching staff to kick off and get the season underway.

“We’re ready to see these guys under the lights and in front of their moms, relatives and thousands and thousands of Ole Miss fans,” Nutt said. “We’re ready to see that. You want to see how they respond and how they take to the coaching and all that. We’re just ready.”

The Rebels and coaching staff find answers to many of those questions on Saturday when Ole Miss takes the field against Memphis. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field.
