Nutt Names Team Captains As Gameday Inches Closer
8/28/2008 | Football
OXFORD, Miss. With the Rebels' opener against Memphis two days away, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt announced the team captains for the 2008 season, Thursday.
This year's permanent team captains are strong safety Jamarca Sanford (Batesville), defensive tackle Peria Jerry (Batesville), offensive tackle Michael Oher (Memphis, Tenn.) and fullback Jason Cook (Suwanee, Ga.).
"They got voted for (by the team) Sunday night," Nutt said. "Since Peria is injured, we are going to have Ashlee Palmer walk out. What we'll do is have Ashlee, Dustin Mouzon and Rob Park as substitutes. But those four (Sanford, Jerry, Oher and Cook) will go down in the books as the (permanent) captains that the team voted for."
The Rebels did not practice in pads Thursday as they worked on final preparations for the first game.
"We had a very good practice," Nutt said. "We took the pads off and put an emphasis on concentration. They looked very sharp. Tomorrow will be a little more than a walk-thru, kind of like a jog-thru."
Nutt also addressed some of the guys (Reid Neely, Allen Walker and Ted Laurent) who have returned from injuries and their status for Saturday's game.
"They're ready to go," he said. "We are going to play them. I don't know if they are 100 percent, but we're going to play them."
When asked about Jerry, Nutt said he's getting better, but there is still no exact timetable for his return. "He's getting better, he's in the water running on the good machine that we have. Larandust (Coleman Athletic Trainer) has been on top of him. (Jerry) and Greg Hardy have both done really well in rehab. I'll worry about that next week."
Kickoff for Saturday's game against the Tigers is 6 p.m. at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field.
