Ole Miss In Third After Round One At Carpet Capital

9/12/2008 | Men's Golf

DALTON, Ga. The Ole Miss men’s golf team, led by senior Jesse Speirs, shot a 290 in the first round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate Friday, and stands in third place at The Farm Club.

The Rebels trail East Tennessee State (287) by three and Central Florida (289) by one. Clemson and Tennessee-Chattanooga are tied for fourth at 291.

Speirs fired a 3-under 69 including six birdies, and is tied for second, one back of Central Florida’s Blayne Barber. The All-SEC performer birdied his last, No. 9, to get into the tie for second.

Senior Stefan Strandlund shot a 1-over 73 in his first tournament with the Rebels, and is tied for 22nd. He posted five birdies on the day.

Freshman Sean Dale also carded a 1-over 73 in his debut for the Rebels and is tied for 22nd. The AJGA All-American finished with six birdies and would have posted a red number if not for a double-bogey on the par-3 13th.

The Rebels’ other freshman sensation Joe David tallied a 75 in his debut. His round included an eagle on the par-4 seventh, which he holed out from 110 yards.

“Our players started off on the back nine and got off to a slow start,” head coach Ernest Ross said. “I could see that they were a little tight. We had three new guys playing in their first college tournament. I am proud of the way we rebounded on our last nine holes (3-under), which was the much tougher side of the two.

“We are very pleased with the way we held our composure and continued to believe in ourselves. The greens are much faster than what we’ve had at our home course. We had a good practice session after the round, and we are looking forward to Saturday.”

Ole Miss will tee off the second round Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. EST. Saturday and Sunday’s rounds will have live scoring. To follow the Rebels, go to www.OleMissSports.com and click on the link in the calendar.
