Sophomore Leads Lady Rebels At Bulldog Invitational

ATHENS, Ga. Ole Miss women’s tennis sophomore Karen Nijssen picked up two wins in singles on day two of the Bulldog Invitational Saturday to lead the Lady Rebels at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

 

Nijssen, ranked No. 73 in the nation, defeated Amanda Rales of Virginia, ranked No. 106, 6-4, 6-2.  Later in the day, the All-SEC performer beat Alba Berdala 6-1, 6-1 to improve to 3-1 on the weekend in singles and doubles. 

 

Freshman Kristi Boxx, a native of Mississippi, topped Cavalier Claire Bartlett 6-4, 6-4 and then beat Katya Zapadalova of Indiana 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.  The Lady Rebels’ other freshman, Gabriel Rangel, split her matches as well.  After losing to Emily Fraser of Virginia, Rangel came back to beat Sigrid Fisher of Indiana 6-1, 7-5.

 

The three-day, round-robin tournament concludes Sunday with doubles play at 9 a.m. followed by singles action beginning at 10:30 a.m.
