Making the Adjustment

Ashlee Palmer has had a lot of adjusting to do at Ole Miss.

Step one was learning the small-town lifestyle of Oxford compared to the big-city style he was used to in California.

"It seems to me that everybody enjoys everybody," he said. "Everybody knows each other and enjoys one another."

The senior also didn't have a tough time adjusting to life on a Southeastern Conference football field. In his first season as a Rebel, Palmer led the team in interceptions with three, total tackles with 89, pass break-ups with seven and two fumble recoveries.

The safety turned linebacker said he was just doing his job by going after the football.

"Last year, I came in trying to focus on helping the team," Palmer said. "I didn't know if I would become a starter or not. So when I became a starter, it just made me want to work even harder to help the team.

"Coming in and playing right away was big; I got some experience coming into this year. I have bigger and better goals to accomplish now."

Now, Palmer and his teammates haved learned to adjust to Coach Houston Nutt's style of football.

"Last year was more demanding," Palmer said. "Coach Nutt demands everything out of us, but it's more in a coaching way. We have more coaching this year than last year. We know what to do in certain situations."

In his final season as a Rebel, Palmer wants to end his career on a high note. Just like every team across the nation, Palmer wants to help his team get to a bowl game, something Ole Miss has not done since Eli Manning was the 2004 Cotton Bowl MVP instead of the Super Bowl's.

Palmer said he would be disappointed if the team did not reach a bowl game, but he would look at the year in other ways.

"I would just have to look at the good things about it-the record and the accomplishments we have made coming from 3-9 to whatever our record ends up being at the end."

Once his college football career is said and done, Palmer hopes to have to make the adjustment from Ole Miss to professional football.
