OXFORD, Miss. -- Saturday's historic upset of No. 4 Florida in The Swamp has earned the Ole Miss Rebels the honor of starring on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The issue will hit newsstands on Tuesday.
The magazine's headline reads "Rebels Rise" and the cutline of the cover photo is "Ole Miss defensive end Greg Hardy clobbers QB Tim Tebow of the Gators, No. 4 no more".
This marks the third time Ole Miss has been featured on the cover of SI. The Sept. 24, 1962 college football preview showcased the Rebelettes, while Archie Manning "Idol of Ole Miss" donned the Sept. 14, 1970 edition. The Manning 1970 cover was also a part of the Sept. 26, 1996 issue along with son Peyton.
In addition, several former Rebels have appeared on the front of Sports Illustrated as professional athletes, including New York Giants quarterback Charlie Conerly on Dec. 3, 1956, PGA golfer Cary Middlecoff on June 10, 1957 and Giants QB Eli Manning on Jan. 28, 2008 and Feb. 8, 2008.
