9/5/2008 | Volleyball

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. The Rebels dropped the second match of the day on Friday as Ole Miss (2-4) fell to host Jacksonville State (3-3) by a score of 3-1 (21-25, 25-12, 24-26, 20-25).

Freshman outside hitter Katie Norris led the Rebel offense with 10 kills, while freshman middle blocker Regina Thomas also had a coming out party with seven kills and seven blocks (1 BS, 6 BA) on the night. Allison Weber led the defensive effort for the Rebels as she notched 14 digs. Emily Kvitle and Morgan Springer also tallied double-digit digs on the night with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

"I think the key is that we're going through some growing pains," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "We need a little more consistency. At times, we do some great things, but we have to be more consistent with it."

The teams traded scores to open the first set before Jacksonville State inched out to an early 6-3 lead on the Rebels. The lead grew out to a six point advantage for the Gamecocks at 12-6 before Ole Miss called a timeout to regroup.

The Rebels chipped away at the lead out of the break, cutting the advantage to three at 14-11. Jacksonville State would push back ahead only to see the Rebels cut the lead to three twice more. The Gamecocks then called their own timeout holding a 19-16 edge.

Ole Miss scored out of the break to trim the lead to two, but Jacksonville State surged back in front by five to push the Rebels into a second timeout down 22-17. Ole Miss couldn't mount a rally as Jacksonville State claimed the first set 25-21.

The Rebels struck quickly to open the second set, using quick rallies to take a 5-1 lead. Ole Miss continued to build on the lead before Jacksonville State called its first timeout of the set with the Rebels holding an 8-2 advantage.

Moments later, the Gamecocks burned a second timeout as the lead grew to 13-4 in favor of the Rebels. Ole Miss never looked back from there, evening the match with a 2-12 win in the second set.

Jacksonville State took the early advantage in the third set and held to the lead until the Rebels took the lead at 13-12. The Gamecocks moved back out in front, however, pushing out to a 17-14 lead and sending Ole Miss into a timeout.

The Rebels fought back to reclaim the lead at 19-18 on a service ace from Weber, at which point Jacksonville State called a timeout of its own. Jacksonville State pushed back into the lead and sent Ole Miss to the bench in a timeout down 23-21.

The Gamecocks took the third set 26-24.

The fourth set opened with the two squads trading scores in a back-and-forth battle, but Ole Miss called timeout when the Gamecocks took a four point lead at 10-6.

The Rebels hung with the Gamecocks, keeping within two points of the home team but were never able to take control and called timeout for a second time when the lead swelled to 21-17 in favor of Jacksonville State.

The Gamecocks claimed the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.

Ole Miss will return to action on Saturday with a single match against Creighton at noon to close out the Gamecock Invitational.
