9/5/2008 | Volleyball
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. Freshman Katie Norris came up with 17 kills and hit .375 for the match, but it wasn't enough to help the Rebels to victory on Friday as Ole Miss (2-2) fell to UAB (1-2) by a score of 3-0 (21-25, 22-25, 20-25) in the first match of the Gamecock Invitational.
Norris' 17 kills led all players in the match, but she was the only Rebel to reach double-digits offensively. Morgan Springer led the defensive effort for the Rebels with 12 digs in the match. Rachel Kieckhaefer also turned in a solid performance with 28 assists and six kills on 12 swings with no attack errors for the match.
The teams traded scores top open the set as the Rebels grabbed the first score. But, UAB put together an early run to move out to a 6-3 lead. The lead grew from there on Rebel miscues, pushing Ole Miss into a timeout down 9-4.
Allison Weber notched a kill for the Rebels out of the break, but the Blazers continued to press the advantage and moved out to a 12-6 lead. Ole Miss refused to yield, however, fighting back to even the set at 14 on a service ace from Weiss and force UAB to call timeout.
The Rebels reclaimed the lead 16-15 on a kill from Weiss, but the Blazers pushed back ahead and Ole Miss called timeout trailing by three at 20-17.
Ole Miss grabbed four straight scores behind the serving of Catherine Heck, but it wasn't enough as UAB claimed the first set 25-21.
The Rebels grabbed the first two points of the second set, but the Blazers surged into the lead with a run that saw the Rebels call timeout down 10-5.
Aggressive serving and a tough attack cut the lead to one at 14-13 before the Rebels saw back-to-back miscues push the lead back to three in favor of UAB. The lead continued to grow in favor of the Blazers as Ole Miss called timeout down 21-16.
The Rebels clawed back to within striking distance, forcing UAB to call timeout on a service ace from Miranda Kitts that put Ole Miss down only two at 22-20. Ole Miss couldn't overcome the deficit, as a service error on set-point gave the Blazers a 25-22 win in the second set.
The third set saw Ole Miss attack with a vengeance, moving out to an 8-5 lead, as the Rebels turned up the intensity coming out of the halftime break. The Blazers closed the gap, tying the match at 10 before pushing out to a three-point edge and forcing the Rebels into timeout down 14-11.
The Rebels put together a furious rally, cutting the lead to three after falling behind by five. UAB took a timeout with a three point lead at 23-20. Ole Miss couldn't complete the rally, however, as two straight points from the Blazers sealed the win with a 25-20 win in the third set.
Ole Miss will return to action at 7 p.m. tonight against host Jacksonville State.
