Rebel Netters Add One Of Nation's Best, Devin Britton

1/12/2009 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The No. 9 nationally ranked Ole Miss men’s tennis team added one of the nation’s best prospects to the squad Monday, as Mississippi native Devin Britton joined the program, head coach Billy Chadwick announced.

This past summer, Britton qualified for the U.S. Open Junior Championship and advanced to the final.  Ranked as high No. 16 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World 18-under Rankings, Britton won several ITF tournaments, including the International Grass Courts Championship in June of 2008.

Recognized as one of the top junior doubles players in the world, Britton won the championship in doubles at the Eddie Herr International as well as the 2008 Orange Bowl.

“We are extremely excited to have Devin join the program.” Chadwick said.  “He trained at the elite Nick Bollettieri Academy, and they have done an outstanding job of helping him develop into one of the top juniors in the world.  With his results of reaching the finals of the  U.S. Open Juniors and winning the prestigious Orange Bowl in doubles, he has established himself as not only one of the top players ever from the state of Mississippi but also in the nation.”

“This is a great program,” Britton said.  “I really like the coaches.  It’s a great team, and it’s close to home.  It’s good for my parents and for me as well.  This is a chance to come back home and play with all these guys.  It feels good to be here. We are going to have a good team this year, and I am looking forward to starting the season.”

The Rebels will kick off the spring this weekend at the SEC Indoor Championships in Lexington, Ky.  The first dual match of the season will be Jan. 29 at home against Troy.  Following that, the Rebels will host the first and second rounds of the ITA National Team Indoor.
