Rebel Netters To Kick Off Spring Season This Weekend

1/15/2009 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The No. 9 nationally ranked Ole Miss men’s tennis team will kick off the spring this weekend at the SEC Coaches Indoor Championships in Lexington, Ky.

The championships will consist of a 64-player draw and 32-team doubles field with matches being played at the Boone Tennis Center and the Lexington Tennis Center.

The Rebels will be led by senior All-Americans Jonas Berg and Bram ten Berge, who are ranked No. 1 in the nation in doubles.  Freshman Otto Sauer, who was here in the fall, will also be in action.

Making their debuts this weekend will be heralded recruits Devin Britton of Jackson, and German twins Marcel and Christoph Thiemann.

The SEC boasts four teams ranked in the ITA top 10 national rankings, including two-time defending national champion Georgia at No. 3. Tennessee is ranked No. 8 followed by Ole Miss and Florida at nine and 10.

“The SEC Indoor is a great way to start the season,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “It’s an individual championship, so it provides an excellent opportunity to get a look at the team.  The SEC is traditionally the premier conference in the nation in tennis, and this year is no exception, with four teams in the preseason top 10.  The true strength of the conference is in the depth from top to bottom.”

Ole Miss has enjoyed plenty of success at the SEC Indoor, including last year when the Rebels won both singles and doubles titles.
