OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss junior utility player Lauren Grill was named a preseason first team All-SEC selection by the league’s softball coaches, it was announced on Tuesday.

Grill, a second team All-SEC pick a year ago, was selected as the utility/designated player. A first team All-America honoree last season by Louisville Slugger and the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association, Grill led the Rebels with a .393 batting average, 35 runs scored, 12 doubles, 12 homers, 41 RBI, a .727 slugging percentage and a .497 on-base percentage. In addition, she finished in the top 10 in the SEC in batting, homers, slugging, on-base percentage, total bases and walks. She set single-season school records in batting, total bases, slugging, on-base percentage and walks.

“This is a great honor for Lauren,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. “It shows the success she has had over the past two seasons is recognized by the other coaches in the league.”

Grill’s 41 RBI last season ranks second on the school’s single-season list and her 72 RBI after just two seasons ranks third on the Rebel career list. Her 12 long balls this past year were the fourth-most in school history and her 26 round-trippers after two years places her second in Ole Miss history behind DeDe Justice.

The Rebels open the 2009 season on the road as they take on 2008 Women’s College World Series participant Louisiana-Lafayette in a three-game series beginning Feb. 6 in Lafayette, La.
