1/27/2009 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss men’s tennis team is calling all fans to help them top the ITA attendance race this season, beginning this week, as the No. 9 nationally ranked Rebels kick off the 2009 dual match season Thursday, against Troy, and Saturday versus Kentucky.  The Rebels and Trojans will square off at 1 p.m., Thursday at the Gillom Sports Center.

Saturday, the Rebels will face Kentucky in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor at 10 a.m., at the Gillom Sports Center.  Admission to all home matches is free.

“Our crowd support in the past has been excellent,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.   “In fact, last year we finished top five in the country for attendance.  This year’s team is a great mix of proven veterans combined with talented newcomers.  We would like to encourage all our fans to come out and get behind them.”

The Rebels are led by the nation’s top-ranked doubles tandem of senior All-Americans Jonas Berg and Bram ten Berge.

In addition to Mississippi native Devin Britton, Thursday’s match will mark the dual match debut for Sweden’s Otto Sauer and German twins Marcel and Christoph Thiemann.

Ole Miss, picked by the coaches to win the overall SEC Championship this year, is coming off a successful tournament at the SEC Indoor Championships.  The Rebels had three players make the quarterfinals, with Britton reaching the semifinals.

Following the Rebels’ match against Kentucky on Saturday, Rice and Wake Forest will play.  The winners will meet Sunday at 2 p.m., for the right to advance to the National Team Indoor Final 16 in Chicago Feb. 13-16.
