Rebels Conclude Competition At SEC/Big 12 Challenge

COLLEGE STATION, Texas Sofie Persson set her second school record of the year as the sophomore finished in second place of the 800 meters with an NCAA provisional time of 2:07.89 to help Ole Miss and the Southeastern Conference Saturday at the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. 

 

Earlier this year, Persson set the school record in the 600 meters at the Arkansas Invitational with a time of 1:30.93. 

 

Freshman Logan Waites recorded the second school record of the afternoon as she accomplished the feat in the 5000 meters with a time of 18:04.59 en route to a ninth place finish.   

 

Sophomore LaJada Baldwin also turned in a strong showing for the women’s team in running events as she finished in second place of the 400 meters with a time of 54.86.  Britney Barnard took fourth place in the 800 meters with her time of 2:10.90. 

 

In field events, junior Davina Orieukwu finished in fifth place in the shot put with a distance of 47-07.00.  Sophomore Betty Williams recorded a mark of 50-07.25 in the weight throw on her way to an eighth place finish. 

 

Freshman Keith Brown turned in a strong showing in sprints as he took sixth in the 60 meters with a time of 6.89.  Brown also finished in eighth place in the 200 meters with a mark of 22.00.  Senior Michael Coleman took sixth in the 200 meters following a time of 21.87. 

 

Distance runner Barnabas Kirui claimed the individual title in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:12.26, while senior Kyle Lewis finished just behind in third place with a mark of 14:30.88.   

 

Several Rebels posted strong marks in field events led by freshman Brian Knight’s second place finish in the high jump.  Knight posted a height of 6-06.75 to record the fifth best mark in school history in the event.  Fellow freshman Tyler Morehead earned a sixth place finish in the event with his mark of 6-02.75. 

 

Freshman Caleb Lee took fourth place in the long jump with a distance of 24-01.75 before placing ninth in the triple jump with a mark of 45-11.75.  Senior Wale Odetunde finished in seventh place of the long jump with a mark of 23-10.75, and earned a fifth place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 49-00.75. 

 

Ole Miss returns to action Feb. 13-14 when the Rebels travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to take part in the Tyson Invitational.
