Women's Tennis Earns National Rankings

1/6/2009 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its latest ITA National Singles and Doubles Rankings as well as the preseason team rankings, and the list finds the Ole Miss women’s tennis team represented in all three polls.

Rebel freshman Kristi Boxx teams up with sophomore All-SEC returnee Karen Nijssen for a ranking of No. 21 in doubles.  The pair finished the fall with a 10-3 record, including winning the Ole Miss Fall Classic.

Boxx also earned a national ranking in singles, coming in at No. 51 after an outstanding debut in the fall.  The Grenada, Miss., native compiled an impressive 12-2 singles record to go with the 10-3 doubles mark.  She won the Ole Miss Fall Classic singles title and advanced all the way from pre-qualifying to the qualifying finals at the Riviera All-American Championships.

The Rebels as a team begin the 2009 season ranked No. 52.  With a mix of veterans and talented newcomers, they are looking for a strong showing this year.

“The team rankings are mostly based on last year’s results,” head coach Mark Beyers said.  “Our strength this year will be in our depth.  We’ve never had this kind of depth before.  It’s nice to have Karen, who has played high in the lineup, and Kristi, (who beat several top players in the fall).  To have those kind of players at the top of the lineup helps.

“This (52) is a good starting point.  We have a schedule that gives us plenty of opportunities to move up.  We are excited about the commitment of the players and looking forward to the spring and what we can accomplish.”

The Rebels will open the season Jan. 27 at home against Arkansas State, before heading to Athens, Ga., for the first and second rounds of the ITA National Team Indoor.
