Women's Tennis Starts Hot At ITA Southern Regional

AUBURN, Ala. -- The Ole Miss women's tennis team posted a 10-1 record in singles and doubles on day one of the ITA Southern Regional Championships here Friday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The Rebels only lost one match in the first round of singles and went undefeated in doubles. Kristi Boxx defeated Giorgia Romeo of UAB 6-2, 6-4 and Karen Nijssen beat Taylor Morgan of Samford 6-4, 6-1. Junior Connor Vogel improved to 8-2 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ana Burjaili of Louisiana-Monroe. Gabriela Rangel topped Emma Smith of Troy 6-2, 6-4 and Abigail Guthrie handed Samford's Taylor Morgan a 6-4, 6-1 loss to remain undefeated.
In doubles, Guthrie teamed up with Soledad Podlipnik for an 8-2 victory against a team from Louisiana-Monroe before taking out LSU's Kylie Adamek and Keri Frankenberger 8-3. Vogel and Rangel won both their matches 8-2 and 8-1, respectively. After a first round bye, the No. 9 ranked duo of Boxx and Nijssen dominated the South Alabama duo of Parija Maloo and Alina Volman, 8-1.
"We played very well in doubles," head coach Mark Beyers said. "We were a little sloppy in singles, but good enough to win today. We will need to play better singles Saturday."
Play continues Saturday with two rounds of singles and one round of doubles.

Emma Smith (Troy) 6-2, 6-4; Plamena Kurteva (AU) def. Soledad Podlipnik (OM) 6-3, 6-3; Kristi Boxx (OM) def. Giorgia Romeo (UAB) 6-2, 6-4.
DOUBLES
First round -- Podlipnik/Guthrie (OM) def. Clark/Winkel (ULM) 8-2; Vogel/Rangel (OM) def. Van Rensberg/Lewis (SAM) 8-2. Second round -- Nijssen/Boxx (OM) def. Maloo/Volman (USA) 8-1; Podlipnik/Guthrie (OM) def. Adamek/Frankenberger (LSU) 8-3; Vogel/Rangel (OM) def. Kurdadze/Levy (TUL) 8-1.
