NEW ORLEANS, La. - Ole Miss junior runner Barnabas Kirui was selected as a recipient of the 2009 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Cross Country All-American award the USTFCCCA announced.
Award winners finished among the top 40 in either the men's or women's races at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships held Monday in Terre Haute, Ind.
Kirui turned in a fourth place finish at the championships with a 10k time of 29:24.1 to post the highest NCAA Cross Country Championships finish for an Ole Miss athlete in school history. He bested Pablo Sierra's 45th-place finish in 1992.
Liberty University's Sam Chelanga won the race in 28:41.3 to become the second student-athlete from Liberty to win the NCAA crown in the past three years. Northern Arizona senior David McNeil was second at 29:06.5 while Stanford sophomore Chris Derrick took third at 29:06.5 before Kirui posted his fourth place finish.
