Rebels Rally To Down Arkansas In Season Finale

11/26/2009 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. - The Rebel volleyball team ended its season on a high note Wednesday when Ole Miss (10-20, 4-16 SEC) rallied from two sets down to defeat Arkansas (13-18, 7-13 SEC) by a score of 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-13).

The win gave the Rebels a sweep in the season series after defeating the Razorbacks 3-0 in Fayetteville earlier in the season. Ole Miss has won eight straight over Arkansas and swept the season series four straight years beginning in the 2006 season. The current senior class never lost a match against the Razorbacks.

Sophomore outside hitter Katie Norris led the Rebel attack with 17 kills, while senior Caitlin Weiss added 16 kills and freshman Whitney Craven put down 13 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Regina Thomas was also an efficient scoring threat, hitting .389 and recording no errors with seven kills and seven blocks on the night.

Sophomore libero Morgan Springer posted a match-high 26 digs to lead the Rebels' defensive effort on the back row.

"This was a great come-from-behind victory for us," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "It shows the maturity level of this team and how we've grown throughout the season. Morgan Springer played exceptionally well with her 26 digs. Our serving was good and we maintained our composure throughout the match."

Ole Miss struggled early in the first set, falling behind 7-2 right out of the gates, but settled in and began chipping away at the Arkansas lead. Down 20-11, the Rebels went on a run that saw the home team pull within one at 23-22. Ole Miss couldn't overtake the Razorbacks, however, dropping the first set 25-23.

The second set again saw the Rebels fall behind early, but cut back into the lead and even the score at seven. Arkansas pushed back into the lead with a run only to see Ole Miss again trim the lead to one at 14-13. But again, the Rebels were unable to overtake the Razorbacks as Arkansas held on to the lead and closed out the second set 25-21 to take a two set lead into the break.

Ole Miss came out of the break with a renewed vigor and took control of the third frame from the start. The Rebels scored the first point, and even though Arkansas would tie the score twice and cut the lead to one at 13-12, Ole Miss never gave up the lead, taking the third set 25-17 with an 8-0 run to close out the frame and snap a 17-all tie.

The squads battled back and forth early in the fourth set, with Arkansas holding the slight advantage in the beginning stages. Ole Miss stayed close to the Razorbacks, eventually using a run to tie things at 11. After six ties and six lead changes, the Rebels pushed ahead for good in the fourth set and evened the match at two sets a piece with a 25-20 win in set four.

Ole Miss took control of the fifth set from the start, pushing out to a 4-1 lead before Arkansas would settle themselves and tie the set at seven. The Rebels then used a pair of kills from Craven and Weiss sandwiching a service ace from Marielle Oestermeyer to take a 10-7 lead. Arkansas would even the score again at 13, but back-to-back kills from junior Miranda Kitts gave the Rebels the 15-13 win and the match.
