Boxx Wins First Round At ITA National Indoor

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore Kristi Boxx of the Ole Miss women's tennis team, advanced to the second round of singles at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Thursday, with a straight set win over Texas freshman Aerial Ellis.

The Grenada native raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first set, before seeing Ellis, who has posted several big wins early in her career, come back to make it 5-3. Boxx eventually closed out the set 6-4 and then gained a 4-1 lead in the second set on her way to winning it 6-3 to move onto the second round.

Boxx, ranked No. 25 in the nation, will face the No. 4 seed, Jana Juricova of California, Friday at 9:30 a.m. CT.

Earlier in the morning, Boxx teamed up with Karen Nijssen in the first round of doubles. The two, ranked No. 9 in the country, led the team of Michaela Kissell and Dominika Zaprazna of Marshall 7-5, before seeing the Thundering Herd duo win four straight games to take the match 9-7.

The ITA National Indoor features the nation's top men's and women's singles and doubles players, and is the second of three grand slam events during the year.
