12/1/2009 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. - For the third straight season, the Ole Miss volleyball team had a player named to the Southeastern Conference's All-Freshman team when outsider hitter Whitney Craven was selected for the honor by the league's coaches this week.

Craven joins sophomore Regina Thomas as current Rebels who were selected to the All-Freshman team in their inaugural season. Thomas was selected in 2008, while outside hitter Jackie Jones was selected in 2007. Jones suffered an injury following her first season with the Rebels and now serves as a student assistant with the program.

"It's a tribute to how well Whitney played this year that she was selected for this team," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "It recognizes the skills she brings to the floor and I look forward to three more years of her helping us achieve our goals."

Craven burst onto the scene, posting a double-double in her first match with the Red and Blue as she put down 11 kills and came up with 11 digs against Texas State at the Missouri Tiger Invitational. Craven went on to tally four double-doubles on the season.Despite missing two weeks with injury at the start of conference play, Craven tallied 218 kills and 199 digs in her freshman campaign. She posted a season-high 20 kills in the Rebels' win over Alabama and hit .364 for the match as Ole Miss rallied to defeat the Crimson Tide 3-2.

She posted a season-high 22 digs in the season-finale against Arkansas as she once again helped the Rebels rally to claim a 3-2 win and pick up the program's eighth straight win over the Razorbacks dating back to the 2006 season. Craven also posted a double-double in that match and was named SEC Freshman of the Week for her performance.

On the year, Craven posted 12 double-digit kill performances and seven double digit dig matches.
