OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt announced the signing junior college defensive end Wayne Dorsey to a national letter of intent on Wednesday. Dorsey, of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, will join the Rebels in January and have two years of eligibility remaining.
"We are very excited about Wayne joining our program," Nutt said. "I want to thank Coach Steve Campbell at Mississippi Gulf Coast for allowing us to recruit his players and commend him for the tremendous job he and his staff have done coaching them."
Dorsey, a native of Baltimore, Md., racked up 30 tackles and 5.0 QB sacks in just six games at defensive end for Mississippi Gulf Coast last season. He earned honorable mention All-America honors from the NJCAA after helping lead the Bulldogs to a 10-2 record and a No. 8 national ranking.
"Wayne is a very good player and we are excited, because he fills a need for us at defensive end," Nutt said. "He has the size, character and play-making ability that you look for. With us losing three seniors at that position, we are looking for play-makers and with one or two more guys, we could have a special defensive end class."
The 6-foot-8, 250 pound Dorsey was named the No. 1 junior college recruit in the nation by Scout.com and the No.15 JUCO player in the nation by Rivals.com this season. Dorsey led the Bulldogs with 10.0 sacks as a freshman and earned second team preseason All-America honors heading into the 2009 season.
A two-sport star at Southwestern High School in Baltimore, Dorsey earned second team All-City honors in basketball from the Baltimore Sun in 2006 after averaging 15 points and 13 rebounds a game as a senior.
