Nijssen Posts Big Win In Rebel Loss To Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. Despite a big win from sophomore Karen Nijssen, the 53rd-ranked Ole Miss women’s tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 6 Georgia in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Sunday afternoon at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts.  The Rebels will face Florida International in a consolation match Monday at 8 a.m. CT.

The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. The 34th-ranked tandem of Monika Dancevic and Nadja Gilchrist recorded an 8-3 win over Rebels’ Laura van de Stroet and Mimi Renaudin. Then, Naoko Ueshima and Cameron Ellis clinched the point for the Bulldogs with an 8-3 win over freshmen Gabriela Rangel and Abby Guthrie. The feature match between Georgia’s 10th-ranked duo of Chelsey Gullickson and Yvette Hyndman and 21st-ranked Kristi Boxx and Karen Nijssen was halted with the team point was determined. The Rebel duo held a 7-6 edge when play was suspended.

The Rebels fell behind 2-0 when Rangel lost to Gilchrist 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Georgia increased their lead to 3-0 when Boxx dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Hyndman at No. 2 singles, and then clinched it with a straight set victory at No. 4. 

Nijssen provided the lone point for the Rebels, as she defeated seventh-ranked Gullickson 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. 

Florida International fell to Marshall 5-1 in the other match of the day.
