Rebels Remain No. 9 In Latest National Rankings

2/19/2009 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. Following the ITA National Team Indoor last weekend there was a lot of shakeup in the latest ITA National Rankings released Thursday, but the Ole Miss men’s tennis team remained at No. 9.

Virginia, who captured the indoor title, vaulted to No. 1, followed by Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee and Southern California.  UCLA, Stanford, Texas, Ole Miss and Illinois round out the top 10.  The SEC leads the nation with six teams in the top 20.

Ole Miss went 2-1 at the National Team Indoor, falling to No. 5 Southern Cal in the first round before downing No. 16 Florida State 4-1 and then No. 7 Florida 4-1.

The ITA also released the latest individual rankings, and Ole Miss boasts four players in singles and one team in doubles.

Junior Kalle Norberg moved up to No. 32 in the singles rankings.   He owns a 16-3 overall record, 4-1 in dual matches.  His only loss on the season came when he had to retire in the match against Southern Cal due to the flu.

Senior Jonas Berg is ranked No. 39 with a team-leading 17-4 record, including 5-0 in dual matches.

This week’s SEC Freshman of the Week, Devin Britton, made his debut in the rankings at No. 40.  The Mississippi native is off to a 7-4 start, including 3-3 in dual matches.  He clinched both of Ole Miss’ wins at the National Team Indoor last weekend.

Senior Bram ten Berge is ranked No. 79 in singles and teams with Jonas Berg for a No. 4 ranking in doubles.

The Rebels will get an opportunity to pick up another top win next week, when they head to Waco, Texas to face No. 39 TCU and No. 12 Baylor.
