Dowdy Crushes A Pair Of Homers In Rebel Win

2/21/2009 | Softball

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. Ashley Dowdy hit a pair of solo home runs and Becky Nye pitched a complete-game shutout in the Rebels’ 3-0 win over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at the Cathedral City Classic. Ole Miss dropped the first game of the day 8-3 to No. 3 Washington.

Dowdy gave the Rebels an early 1-0 lead with a solo shot to deep left field with one out in the bottom of the second.

The junior from Olive Branch, Miss. repeated herself again in the fifth with a solo bomb to deep left center field that easily cleared the temporary fencing. It was her third homer of the season and third of the tournament.

Dowdy’s two round trippers in the game tied a school record set six times previously, last by junior Lauren Grill, who hit two homers against Kennesaw State in 2006.

Nye earned the win after pitching a complete-game shutout, the ninth of her career. She allowed two hits and struck out three in 7.0 innings of work.

Not to leave her heroics at the plate, Dowdy made a driving catch at third to save a double down the line in the sixth inning.

The Rebels added an insurance run in the sixth after Lisa Conchos singled home Alise Doubt, who had reached on an infield single to start the inning and stole second.

Next up, Ole Miss will travel to Alcorn State on Wednesday before returning home to host the Red & Blue Classic beginning Feb. 27. The tournament field includes Ole Miss, Mississippi Valley State, North Florida, South Carolina-Upstate and Tulsa.

Game One

Ole Miss committed five errors which led to five unearned runs in the Rebels’ 8-3 loss to No. 3 Washington on Saturday at the Cathedral City Classic.

The Huskies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Ashley Charters led off the game with a walk, stole second and third, and then scored on Ashlyn Watson’s single off Ole Miss starting pitcher Lindsey Perry’s glove. The Huskies added two more runs in the inning, one off a throwing error by center fielder Courtnie Ghinaudo and another on an arrant throw by shortstop Cali Overbeck.

Ole Miss struck back for two runs in the third as Aly Presswood led off the inning with an infield single and scored on Courtnie Ghinaudo’s triple down the right field line. Ghinaudo was picked off at third, but Lisa Conchos and Lauren Grill responded with back-to-back doubles to pull the Rebels within 3-2.

Two more Rebel errors helped led to three more Washington runs in the fifth, as Alicia Blake singled and later scored on a fielding error and Morgan Stuart reached on an error and later scored.

Ole Miss loaded the bases in the fifth on a pair of walks and a hit by pitch, but catcher Amber Tramp popped up to end the Rebel threat.

Washington added two more runs in the seventh on an Ashlyn Watson two-run single.

The Rebels got runners on second and third courtesy of a Conchos fielder’s choice and a Grill double in the seventh, but Tramp hit a fly ball to the fence to end the game.

Grill finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and one RBI. Ghinaudo added a triple and an RBI in two at-bats.

Perry took the loss for the Rebels, pitching 7.0 innings and allowing eight runs, three earned, while striking out two.
