Rebels Sweep Alcorn State In Doubleheader

2/25/2009 | Softball

LORMAN, Miss. - Ole Miss pounded out a season-high 16 hits and freshman Kelly Chandler earned her first career win in the Rebels' 6-1 victory over Alcorn State on Wednesday at Lady Brave Park. The Rebels also took the second game of the doubleheader 2-0 over the Lady Braves on Aly Presswood's two-run single in the top of the seventh.

The Rebels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after Alise Doubt doubled to lead off the game and Lisa Conchos followed with a walk. Lady Brave third baseman Hanako Kilburn's errant throw on an Ashley Dowdy grounder allowed Doubt and Conchos to score and gave Ole Miss the early lead.

Courtnie Ghinaudo reached on a bunt single to open the second and later scored on the back end of a double steal to stake the Rebels a to 3-0 lead.

Ole Miss added three more runs in the fourth on a two-run single to right by Conchos and an RBI single up the middle by Alyssa McGovern.

Aly Presswood led the hit barrage for the Rebels, going 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles. Conchos added two singles and two RBI in four at-bats while Doubt and McGovern each had two hits in four at-bats. Eleven Rebels recorded a hit in the game.

Chandler picked up the complete-game win in her first career start. She pitched 7.0 innings and allowed only one run on four hits while striking out six. She did not allow a hit until a single with two outs in the fifth.

Game Two

Aly Presswood's single to left with two outs in the top of the seventh inning drove home Corrine Doornberg and Amanda Hutcheson and gave the Rebels a 2-0 win over Alcorn State in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday.

Presswood's single broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning and gave the sophomore four hits in the two games. Catcher Amber Tramp led off the inning with a single to right and was pinch ran for by Doornberg, who was then sacrificed to second by Ashley Dowdy. Michelle May followed with a single through the left side of the infield and was pinch ran for by Hutcheson. Molly Goza then moved Hutcheson to second on a sac bunt to set up Presswood's game-winning hit.

Lindsey Perry pitched a complete-game shutout to earn the win. It was Perry's second career shutout. She allowed only two hits in 7.0 innings and struck out six.

Perry hit a batter and walked the next to open the bottom of the fourth, but settled down and retired the next three batters leaving runners on second and third.
