Grill Powers Rebels Past UNF; USC-Upstate Game Postponed

OXFORD, Miss. - Lauren Grill’s fourth inning grand slam broke the game open as the Rebels scored seven runs in the frame en route to a 7-3 victory over North Florida on day one of the Red & Blue Classic. Ole Miss’ second game of the day against South Carolina-Upstate was postponed until tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the score tied at one in the bottom of the first.

The Rebels scored all seven of their runs in the fourth inning against the Ospreys highlighted by Grill’s grand slam. Ashley Dowdy led off the frame with a double to left center and scored on Michelle May’s double center with one out. Courtnie Ghinaudo’s RBI bunt single drove home May, who had stolen third. Aly Presswood and Alyssa McGovern then both singled to load the bases for Lisa Conchos, who walked to score Ghinaudo. Grill then stepped to the plate and drove her third home run of the season over the left field wall to stake the Rebels to a 7-1 lead.

Grill finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate and tied a career high with four RBI. May and Ghinaudo each added an RBI, while Conchos walked twice and drove in one run.

North Florida jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second on an RBI sac fly by Airen Payne that gave them a 1-0. The Ospreys added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, after Ole Miss starting pitcher Becky Nye struggled with her control in very rainy conditions. Nye gave up a double, threw a wild pitch, hit a batter and walk another before officials suspended play for 26 minutes due to the rain. After returning she walked one more batter before retiring the next three to end the game.

Nye (7-4) picked up the win in a complete-game effort. She struck out struck and allowed only two hits.

The Rebels will continue their game against USC-Upstate tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with the score tied at one in the bottom of the first. The remaining schedule of the Red & Blue Classic will be announced tomorrow.
