OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss women's golf and men's tennis teams received the Chancellor's Cup during halftime ceremonies honoring student-athlete's academic achievements at the Rebel basketball game Wednesday night.

The Chancellor's Cup is awarded to the men's and women's varsity teams with the highest cumulative grade point average among all sports at Ole Miss.

Women's golf, who ended the fall ranked No. 35 in the nation, earned the overall Chancellor's Cup as well, for the highest GPA among all the teams.

"Goals are made to be attained, and last spring we made a team goal of bringing the Chancellor's Cup back to the Whitten Golf House," head coach Michele Drinkard said. That is exactly what the team did. This is going to be a special spring for us, and being honored with the Chancellor's Cup is a great way to start.

"We are truly blessed at Ole Miss to have the academic resources that Karen Schiferl and her staff at the Fed Ex Student-Athlete Academic Support Center provide for us. We owe a special thank you to German Bello who spends endless hours working with the team, researching and scheduling classes, tutor sessions and working with us as we travel to tournaments."

Men's tennis, ranked No. 9 in the nation, earned the men's cup for the sixth consecutive year. They were out of town in Jackson, Miss., preparing for the annual River Hills Mississippi Cup against arch-rival Mississippi State.

"We take a lot of pride in not only achieving a high level of success on the court, but excelling in the classroom," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "This is a reflection of the hard work that the guys put in on a daily basis."

Also honored at halftime were those student-athletes that made the University's Chancellor's Honor Roll (3.75-4.00 semester GPA), Dean's Honor Roll (3.50-3.74) or the UMAA honor roll (3.00 or higher) during the 2008 calendar year.
