Marcel Thiemann Named SEC Freshman Of The Week

3/11/2009 | Men's Tennis

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Ole Miss men’s tennis team picked up its second conference weekly honor of the season, as Marcel Thiemann has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.

Thiemann, a native of Lehrte, Germany, went 3-0 in singles last week in wins over Memphis, No. 4 Georgia and No. 5 Tennessee.  He gave the Rebels a 2-1 lead against Georgia with his win over junior Christian Vitulli.

Against Tennessee, Thiemann downed Volunteer, Jeremy Tweedt, in straight sets to clinch the victory for the Rebels.  It marked the Rebels’ fourth consecutive win over Tennessee and eighth of the last nine meetings.  Thiemann has not dropped a set in all four of his dual match wins.

Thiemann became the second Rebel to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors this season, joining Devin Britton, who earned the accolade the week of Feb. 17.

Ole Miss, who moved up to No. 3 in this week’s national rankings, will hit the road this weekend for a pair of Top 25 matches against No. 23 Alabama and No. 20 Auburn.  The Rebels and Crimson Tide will square off Friday at 2 p.m. at the UA Varsity Courts.

Live scoring of both matches will be available by going to www.OleMissSports.com and clicking on the link in the calendar box.
