Basham Named To Johnny Bench Award Watch List
3/17/2009 | Baseball
OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss senior catcher Brett Basham has been named as a candidate for the 2009 Coleman Company Johnny Bench Award by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, the organization announced on Tuesday.
A senior for the Rebels, Basham is one of 44 catchers from around the country named to the list. The list will be updated throughout the season before being narrowed down to 10 semifinalists on May 14, 2009. The three finalists will be announced on June 3, before the winner will be announced on June 26.
Basham was named to the inaugural All-SEC Defensive team a year ago after leading the Southeastern Conference in runners caught stealing and leading all catchers in runners picked off. He was drafted in the 16th round by the Chicago White Sox, but elected to return to Ole Miss to play his senior season and complete his degree.
This season, Basham is batting .308 and has helped the Rebels to an 11-4 record and a national ranking as high as 12th by Baseball America.
