Women's Tennis To Begin Play In San Diego Tourney

3/17/2009 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. Coming off a big win over No. 16 Alabama, the Ole Miss women’s tennis team moved up to No. 44 in this week’s Campbell/ITA National Rankings as they get set to face New Mexico in the first round of the Barnes Tennis Center Invitational in San Diego, Calif.  The two teams will meet Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. CT.

“The girls deserve it (the ranking), because they had a great win versus Alabama,” head coach Mark Beyers said.  “But there is a lot of tennis left to be played, starting this week out here in San Diego.  We have to continue to play as well and inspired as we did this past weekend.”

The Barnes Tennis Center Invitational features eight teams.  Each team is guaranteed three matches at the tournament.  The winner of the Ole Miss/New Mexico match will meet the winner of the San Diego/Texas-Arlington match on Thursday.  The losers will play each other.  Friday’s opponent will come from one of the four remaining participants - Texas Tech, Northern Arizona, New Mexico State or Utah.

The Rebels (5-5) are led by freshman Kristi Boxx, who is up to No. 36 in the latest singles rankings, also released Tuesday.  She owns a 7-3 dual match record, 4-1 at No. 1 singles.  Sophomore Karen Nijssen is ranked No. 70 with a 6-4 dual match record.  The duo teams up for a 4-1 record at No. 1 doubles.

New Mexico comes into the match at 3-8 on the season. The Lobos are led by Senior Ola Abou-Zekry, who owns a 6-4 dual match record, 3-4 at No. 1 singles.
