SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The 44th-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team dominated 53rd-ranked Utah 4-0 Friday to capture the inaugural Barnes Tennis Center Invitational. With the win, the Rebels conclude their Spring Break trip 3-0 and improve to 8-5 overall.
Ole Miss got on the board first by taking the doubles point to improve to 8-1 when they win the first point. Karen Nijssen and Kristi Boxx won 8-2 at No. 1 and then Gabriela Rangel and Abigail Guthrie won 8-6 at No. 3 to clinch the point.
Boxx allowed only one game to her opponent, Anastasia Putalina, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, to make it 2-0. Boxx went 3-0 on the trip and improved to 7-1 at No. 1 singles and a team-leading 22-5 overall. Sophomore Lauara van de Stroet moved to 8-3 on the season at No. 3 singles, taking out Elizabeth Johnson 6-2, 6-2 to put the Rebels ahead 3-0. Nijssen clinched the victory when she finished off Erin Monson 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
"We are happy to be the inaugural winner of the Barnes Tennis Center Invitational," head coach Mark Beyers said. "We dominated today. It was a great week, and we are happy to come away with three wins, including two against teams ranked around us. The girls played solid tennis in every match."
The Rebels return home to host No. 12 Florida Friday at 3 p.m., at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
