3/25/2009 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The 35th-ranked Ole Miss women’s tennis team will host No. 14 Florida Friday at 3 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.  In case of inclement weather, the match will be played at the Gillom Sports Center.

Fans coming to the match will enjoy free pizza compliments of 3 Guys Pizza.

Ole Miss jumped up to No. 35 in the latest Campbell/ITA Rankings after claiming the inaugural Barnes Tennis Center Invitational last week in San Diego, Calif.  The Rebels (8-5) are led by this week’s SEC Freshman of the Week, Kristi Boxx, who is ranked No. 36 in singles.  Boxx, a native of Grenada, Miss., went 6-0 last week in singles and doubles and improved to 7-1 at No. 1 singles and 9-3 at No. 1 doubles with sophomore Karen Nijssen.

“We are excited about the opportunity to play another Top 25 team and improve on our ranking,” head coach Mark Beyers said.   “We are playing well right now and look forward to keeping the momentum going.  We encourage all fans to come out and see some great college tennis and watch this young team as they continue to get better.”

Florida comes into the match at 9-5 overall, 3-1 in the SEC. They are coming off a huge weekend two weeks ago, posting wins over then No. 2 Georgia and No. 12 Tennessee.  Their lone conference loss came at Kentucky (4-3).  The Gators are led by junior Marrit Boonstra, who is ranked No. 5 in the nation with a 13-0 record at No. 1 singles.

Following the match against Florida, the Rebels will head to Columbia, S.C., to face 40th-ranked South Carolina.

Admission to all home matches is free.
