Rebels Post Strong Showing At Alabama Relays

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. The Ole Miss track and field team produced one school record, 11 NCAA regional marks and five individual titles over the weekend at the Alabama Relays.

Junior Davina Orieukwu set a new school record in the shot put with an NCAA regional distance of 50-07.50 on her way to a second place finish. Orieukwu surpassed the previous school record mark of 50-05.50 set by Betty Williams last season.

Sophomore Juliana Smith earned an NCAA regional mark in the hammer throw following her distance of 180-09.00. Orieukwu earned her second top-10 finish of the meet by placing sixth in the hammer throw with a mark of 170-11.00

Williams turned in a third place finish in the discus throw with a mark of 146-07.00.

The women's team also placed a pair in the top-10 in the long jump beginning with Rachel Jenkins' second place finish. Jenkins posted a mark of 19-04.75, while freshman Aria Gaines finished in ninth place with a distance of 17-11.75.

Jenkins also finished in second place in the triple jump with a distance of 39-11.50, while Gaines was right behind in third with a mark of 39-09.25.

In running events, sophomore LaJada Baldwin earned individual titles in both the 100 and 200 meters. Baldwin tallied an NCAA regional mark in the 100 meters with a time of 11.68 before recording a time of 24.02 in the 200 meters.

Freshman Kristin Bridges picked up an NCAA regional mark in the 100 meters with a time of 11.70 en route to a second place finish. Bridges went on to finish third in the 200 meters following a time of 24.68.

Kadeshia Fortune also tallied a pair of top-10 finishes in both the 100 and 200 meters. Fortune took fifth place in the 100 meters with a time of 11.93 and seventh in the 200 meters with a mark of 25.17.

In the 400 meters, senior Britney Barnard place fifth with a time of 55.74, while fellow senior Lindsay Doucett finished right behind in sixth place with her mark of 56.99.

Sophomore Sofie Persson tallied the fifth NCAA regional mark for the women's team as she accomplished the feat in the 400 meter hurdles. Persson took third place in the event with a time of 1:00.14. Jasmine Dacus placed eighth with a time of 1:03.85.

The women's relay team recorded three first place finishes and one third place finish. The 4x100 meter relay team raced to a first place finish with a time of 45.82, while the 4x400 meter relay team earned the same result with an NCAA regional time of 3:39.63.

The 1600 meter sprint medley team also finished in first with a time of 3:52.22, while the distance medley team was third with the second fastest time in school history following a mark of 12:15.64.

Sprinter Christopher Bush finished in seventh place in the 200 meters for the men's team with a time of 21.97. Senior Gabriel Ngwiri was the top Rebel finisher in the 800 meters with a sixth place finish and a time of 1:53.74.

Distance runner Kyle Lewis turned in a sixth place showing in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:57.02.

Sophomore Lee Ellis Moore picked up an NCAA regional mark in the 400 meter hurdles with his time of 51.85 on his way to the individual title. Freshman Carson Blanks finished sixth in the event with a mark of 55.16.

The Ole Miss 4x400 meter relay team turned in a fourth place finish in the event with a time of 3:13.38. The distance medley team recorded a time of 10:06.71 en route to a first place finish.

Freshman Jason Anderson place third in the pole vault with a height of 14-01.25, while Karl Kosman took third in the pole vault invitational with a mark of 15-03.00. Colin Moleton took third in the javelin throw with a distance of 197-08.00.

The Rebels featured a strong showing in the long jump as Ole Miss had a trio of jumpers place in the top-10. Freshman Caleb Lee earned an NCAA regional mark and a second place finish with a distance of 25-03.50. Senior Wale Odetunde followed in fifth place with his mark of 23-05.25, while Ras-Len Bully rounded out the trio in ninth with a distance of 22-06.50.

Odetunde went on to win the triple jump on Sunday with an NCAA regional mark of 51-06.25. Lee also posted a strong showing in the event by taking third with a distance of 49-08.50.

Freshman Brian Knight finished in fifth place in the high jump with a mark of 6-08.75.

Senior Derek McGuire won the individual title in the shot put with an NCAA regional mark of 56-08.75.

Ole Miss returns to action April 3-4 when the Rebels travel to Gainesville, Fla., to take part in the Florida Relays.
